Social Sciences Intro

on Sun Jul 15, 2018 10:10 pm
SOCIAL SCIENCE is engaged in the study of phenomena relating to human groups and their sociophysical environment. The term social science implies 2 important contexts:

  1. It involves scientific process
  2. It inquires about the social space

As such, social science and the disciplines within its practice involve a scientific and methodological study of humans and society.

The beginning of Social Science or research can be traced back to ancient Greek Philosophers who inquired questions on ethics, nature of man, society, and the state. Those who began their philosophies answered the questions about nature of man and brought their insights into the nature of societies and development of governments. Plato's philosophy ,for instance, explained how human nature or the soul represented or reflected a society and how a society can achieve harmony by creating classes or divisions. Meanwhile, Aristotle's philosophy discussed how the different types of governments can transform into something useful or corrupt.Herodotus, on the other hand, paid more attention to how the different cultures of different societies converged and diverged.

These Philosophies and ideas were later known to be the foundations of social science disciplines such as political science, anthropology, sociology, linguistics, and history. The heritage of Greek philosophy and critical thinking had an significant effect on the history of social science, as it did with other fields and disciplines in Western Civilization. If not for the Greek philosophers and their inquisitive minds on human nature and man's place in society, social science wouldn't be where it is today.
